A Protagonist is the main character.

An Antagonist is the character who opposes him/her.

Who is your favorite protagonist or antagonist? Why? Can you describe this character’s traits “On target?”

My favorite protagonist is Princess Eglantine in book titled “The Princess and the Peabodys”. These are the three Eglantine’s character traits:

1) She is girlish, because she always likes to wear dresses, wants everyone to call her princess, and likes romantic.

2. She is cheeky, because she thinks she is always different from others on earth the fact that everyone is peasant and she is a loyalty.

3. She is warmhearted, because when it was time for her to go back to her country, she cried and took a long time to farewell with the Peabodys.

This is my own Podcast about Apple Inc. Podcast of Apple Inc.

Why is it important to do things with all of your heart? Where would you like to improve your effort? Why?

It is important to do things with all of your heart, because your father God sent you down to earth to have a wonderful life. But if you live your life on earth in vain, God will be disappointed and regret. And also, you will live on earth just once with your body. Who knows that you’ll live in hell or heaven or lie on dirt deadly forever or come down to earth again and become a mayfly? If you are at Disneyland and it’s 6:00 P.M., will close about in 30 minutes, and you will not have any chances to come again and play anymore, you will try YOUR BEST to ride more rides and have fun. Your life is like your last chance to go to Disneyland. You should try your best and do things you want during your lifetime that you won’t regret right before you die.

I always need, want, and have to do things with all of my heart, because I am greedy that I want to try a lot of things during my life and be expert at my jobs. I would improve my effort especially in studying, because I usually don’t focus on studying. I shake my leg,  spin my pencil, clean my desk, and do other things that I later rush. I should really concentrate and focus on my studying, because I am not going to be a musician, an artist, or an athlete who would only need to concentrate and live in sports, music, or art worlds. I decided to study hard, because then I would be able to choose my jobs in more variety options. So I really need to study my best which also means I need to study with all of my heart!

Do you believe God can answer your prayers? How does this play out in your life?

I believe God can answer my prayers, because God is always watching me, loves me, and has a wonderful plan for my life. But that doesn’t mean by he will always answer my prayers that there will be things happening which are always good for me. But still, believe that God has wonderful plan for me and your life! Although he didn’t give you talent of singing, he might have gave you talent of playing piano. This plays out in my life by after I finished praying to God that I want to make up with my friend and become friends as before, next day my faught friend and I both apologize each other and we become friends as usual like a magic!  However, REMEMBER that God is the one who helps you to be a wonderful person not making you. You are the one who is deciding whether you would accept Jesus as your savior and choose whether you would do your best during your lifetime with faith and be a wonderful person or waste your life time haning out, playing, and sleeping  and die despodently.

We are in the midst of planning silly awards. What is your dream? Have you ever wanted to be a star actress? The MVP of a basketball team? First chair soloist in the orchestra? one dream many students have is to hear a crowd cheering, just for them, just like the Moose.

Have you ever wanted to be a star? What would you like to be recognized for?

I always have thought about my dream to this day and still do, but I haven’t decided yet. I think it is because I always hesitate when I have to make a decision. Whenever I am in a dilemma, having problems choosing or deciding, I always have asked my mom, my brother, or my friends “What would you choose if you are me?”. I know that it’s the stupidiest thing in the world asking people around me “Which job would you choose if you were me?”. So I am still looking for my dream and this is the list with description of which I would like to be recognized and features of my dream I am looking for:

-I want to be a spider person.

Please don’t misunderstand that I want to be a spiderman. Different from other animals, spider has 8 legs  and each leg doesn’t work together. One leg makes a string, another makes another string, and there may be different strings everywhere. Then later, the spider connects the strings and makes it into a cobweb. This is what I want to be. I want to try and do a variety of jobs during my lifetime. I would like to tell you my three things which I like to do:

For example, I like golfing. I play golf a lot and this became an important hobby, because even my family loves to golf. We even travel to other countries or go to golf clubs every weekend. Golf is our family’s only leisure which we can enjoy together during weekend or holidays. Although I started to golf last year, I improved and began to like more and more. What I like most about golf is that when I hit the ball with a club, the ball flies high. It makes me feel like I threw all of my stresses far away.  I think I have great potential in golf. I won’t be as good as professional golfers, but better than the amateurs. I want to enjoy golf to the day when I became a grown-up and compete with other people with it.

Another thing I like is to communicate with people. After I meet a person, I like to ask questions and get to know more about that person and I will feel much more relieved. This is because I’m always curious of everything, and I hate to wonder about unknown things. So maybe I might have skills in interviewing people.

Finally I like to write. When I am writing, it feels like I am flying in the sky. This is because I can write all of my opinions and my story freely on a piece of pape. I almost write everyday. When I am at school, teachers give us questions which we should answer on a piece of paper. When I am at home, I write a journal and do homework which is usually researching and writing down the answers. Writing has provided for me creativive thinking. Things I like to write are fiction stories, pesuasive essays, and a short sentences using my new vocabulary words. I feel that school writing assignments helped me improve and I think I can be a professional writer when I grow up. I want to write for a newspaper on world issues.

-As you can see, I have many interests and want a variety of jobs. I want to find jobs which I can enjoy, work hard for, and never regret.

I don’t think I would have to explain like the first one. Basically, I want to ENJOY my life without any stress!!! :P

-Also, I want to be an expert of the job I do.

Although I want to try a variety jobs, I also want to be an expert on each jobs. If I am an author, I want to be an expert at writing creatively, and if I am a baker, I want to be an expert at baking cookies, bread, and cakes that everyone will enjoy.

How has this unit caused you to think differently about advertisements?

This unit caused me to think differently about advertisements by teaching me three things which are  propaganda, principled, and persuasion. We learned those, because advertisements always use those in order to make people to buy their products or do things which they want. And these are the meanings for propaganda, principled, and persuasion:

Propaganda: carefully chosen words and pictures to persuade person’s emotions, opinions, attitudes, and behavior.

Principled: Honest, taking responsibility, doing the right thing(s).

Persuasion: Asking audience to do something: opinions and reasons.

After learning each meanings of propaganda, principled, and persuasion, we were able to distinguish pictures whether they were used in propaganda, principled, or persuasion. This is one of my works:

Finally,we learned more deeply about a big subject called propaganda. And I had been thinking that propaganda is an adjective which is for advertisements or other things such as medias which have used careful chosen words or pictures that gives storng feelings to people and make them to do things they want. But different from my thought, the propagandas separated in five ways which were Bandwagon, Testimonial, Transfer, Repetition, and Plain Folk. We learned each meanings as same as we learned meanings of propaganda, principled, and prersuasion. Then our teacher Mrs. Major gave us an assignment which was making our own one of the five types of propaganda used advertisement. And this is my Testimonial advertisement:

Can propaganda be principled? Why or why not?  Explain your answer with the definitions of propaganda and principled and with examples of propaganda you’ve been viewing .

I can’t say propaganda can be whether principled or not, because it depends on how it gets used for. I will show you two propaganda examples which are carefully used, but try to change your feelings, behaviors, attitudes, or thinking .

Example A. A popular pop star named Beyonce comes out in a junk food commercial and says, “Even I who really cares about my intake eats this yummy hamburger every morning.” then the junk food company would have used Testimonial type of propaganda. The propaganda which has used in the junk food commercial will not be principled, because every woman would start eating the hamburger which Beyonce has advertised and get fat. So this propaganda, which was used for this commercial, is not principled and used in negative way, because it is for the junk food company and the pop star Beyonce’s revenue.

Example B. A poster which is a picture of a cigarette shaped train and there is phrase “Riding this cigarette train is easy. But getting off from this train is difficult.”. This advertisement is used Transfer type of propagana, because it gives you a strong punch with its message. And also it is principled, because first of all, it is saying the fact that once it becomes habit such as smoking, it is easy to get use to it, but hard to stop it. And it is doing the right thing by stop letting people to smoke. And finally, it has its own responsibility by saying it is easy to get use to it but hard to end up so let’s not addict in smoking.

From these, are you able to see that although two commercials are both propagandas but one is principled and another is not? If yes, then you should always need to be becareful while you are looking at commercials and determine whether it is principled that you can believe or it has used a propaganda in a negative way! :)

What is your favorite commercial? What happens? What is it trying to get you to do? Does it use propaganda?

My favorite commercial is one of the Kobaco (Korea Public Campaign Commercial Organization) ‘s commercials which got 2010′s Best Public Campaign Award titled “Low Carbon Green Growth”.

As the title tells you, this commercial has been made in order to decrease the carbon dioxide and make the earth clean as before. The children are singing about changing earth by promoting environmentally friendly ways of doing things.  There are two different actions coming out in each rhyme which are similar but one is increasing the carbon dioxide and one isn’t. I will translate this Korean commercial into English  in order to make you to understand this commercial:

Children Singing:

♪♭♩♬    Don’t press (action of a man pressing a brake of his car) but press (action of a man pressing his bicycle’s pedal).

Don’t put up (action of a man putting up the heat in his room) but put up (action of a man putting up his zipper on his jacket).

Don’t hold (action of a woman who is trying to hold on to the elevator in order to ride it) but hold (action of a woman holding the stair handle).

Don’t put (action of a woman carrying a disposable plastic bag which is full of groceries) but put (action of a woman and a girl carrying a reusable grocery bag).

Don’t start (action of a man starting the car engine) but start (action of a male and a female starting walking).

Don’t think for yourself (action of a woman and her children smiling) but think for everyone (action of a happy polar bear family). ♪♭♩♬

Narrator:

The actions look similar but the results are completely opposite.

The more you fulfill in making earth green, the less CO2(carbon dioxide) situates.

Korea Public Campaign Commercial Organization

This commercial is trying to promote the ways which are good for the environment and for others, instead of using the convenient ways which harm earth.

This commercial used a propaganda, because it is trying to influence the way people think or do by showing the examples which are earth friendly actions and which are bad for the earth.

Why is it your favorite?

This is my favorite commercial, because this commercial is made in a positive way by trying have people fulfill the environmentally friendly actions which will make the earth cleaner. It’s good for everyone.

Why is it important to watch commercials carefully?

It is important to watch commercials carefully, because commercials are always trying you to do something which they want. So they usuallly use propaganda techniques to change your thinking into a positive way toward their product or things which they want you to do. But these will sometimes be only good for them and not you. For example, you might waste your money or time on something else instead of what is nessassary. So in order to prevent those, you should always think of your own opinions first before you listen to them or try to buy their products.

1. How are people changed through struggles with their environment/culture?

The character changes emotionally through the struggle with her physical environment, which challenges her by death of her family and the people who left her.  At the beginning of the novel, the character is gentle but then the character becomes tougher and stronger. For example when she and her brother gets  stuck in the island, her brother gets killed by the wild dogs. So, she made weapons and killed few wild dogs by herself.

The character changes physically through the struggle with her physical environment, which challenges her by making her surviving alone. At the beginning of the novel, Karana is proud of her island and is happy to live in the island. But later, the character tries to leave the island by herself while she gets stuck in the island and feels lonely.

For example in the beginning of the novel, she was gathering the roots in Coral Cove because those were needed in her village. She likes to help her village, because she is proud of her island. The reason why she likes the island is the fact that  it is her home which has a beautiful view and a special name which is called ‘The island of the Blue Dolphins’.  But after everyone left the island and she becomes stranded there, she decided to leave the island by riding a canoe although she was not skilled with a canoe. She wanted to leave the island because she hated to live in the island without any houses, people, and being pursued by wild dogs.

People are changed through struggles with their environment is true to life because when I had to sleep less than 5 hours because of too many assignments and exams, I started getting annoying of my friends and parents when they ask questions or talk to me. So I sometimes get angry although it is not about negative things, I grouch, ignore, or sometimes yell at them. So, my personality changed into irascible and sensitive through the environment of studying and working really hard on exams and assignments without sleeping enough.

2. In the face of adversity, what qualities cause some people to prevail over struggles in the environment while others fail?
The main character Karana overcomes the challenge of loneliness through the belief that the ship would return. This hope helps her, because she was able to find some ways to survive such as searching for food, making a house, making weapons, hunting animals, and hiding when the Aleut ship comes.

The main character Karana overcomes the challenge of surviving by herself through the actions of preparing for the future. This helps her, because she will not have any problems to find for food or worry about the transportation that can help her to flee the other part of the island when the Aleut ship comes back to the island. She prepared to flee by storing food, making a small canoe which can handle easily, and check the sea everyday.

The supporting character Chief Cogwig fails that challenge by not preparing for the future , because when the Aleuts, which were strangers, comes to the island, Chief Cogwig told his real name which not many did in the island. The island people usually do not use their real(secret) names because they believed that the names will become worn out and loses magic if they use.

However after he made a deal with the Aleuts which was to share their sea otters, he believed those dishonest people and did not care if a bulk of sea otters got killed by the Aleuts everyday. Because of this not preparing for the future, he got killed by the Aleuts when he complained that they are not sharing equally to them on their leaving date.

Some people prevail over struggles in the environment while others fail when they are facing of adversity are true to life because in my experience, I had a big math exam that I had to solve and practice a lot of problems every day. Three weeks were given to me and other students to study. First and Two weeks, I almost spent my whole day doing math. But after I did math very hard for two weeks, I got sick of studying math and believed that things that I did on first and second weeks will stay in my head until the exam date. Then, I started to occupy with playing on the third week which was the last week to study.
However on the math exam date when I got the exam, I was not able to solve most of  the math problems. Half of my exam’s problems were filled in blanks.

After the exam was over, I complained one of my friends that the exam was very difficult to me. But, my friend said that it was really easy to her. I felt envious of her. However as I expected, my test score was terrible but my friend’s score was high and good. My friend and I were given same amount of time to study for the exam and my friend succeed but I did not because of our methods of using time were different.

3. What personal qualities and beliefs help you deal with difficult and unexpected circumstances that you encounter in your environment?
The environment of school challenged me with many misunderstandings in friendships. My personal belief in apologizing helped me overcome these difficulties with friends.

For example when my best friend, Kathy,  got angry at me on Pepero day, because I gave a  pepero pack that has Kathy’s name on it to another friend Elaine, even though I already gave Kathy a pepero pack. Kathy misunderstood that I planned to give her two pepero packs, but I gave one of hers to Elaine because I thought that Kathy is my friend not a best friend.

However, it was my fault that I forgot to erase her name. I was able to understand Kathy’s feeling and also felt sorry to Elaine that I gave her a pepero pack that has Kathy’s name on it. So, I apologized to Kathy and told her that I wanted to give pepero packs to all of my friends equally not give more to her. Kathy also apologized, because she had misunderstood.

Apology helped me in friendships because fighting usually happens when a person does not know what she had done wrong to the other person. But through apology, you are able to express yourself that you are feeling guilty because you have done something that the other person became angry about it. Apology can also help in other areas as well that relates to society.

During fighting, there are two things that can stop fighting which are apology and forgiveness. There are no orders in these two because those are for the people who can know and understand other people’s feelings. But usually through your apology, you are able get other person’s forgiveness. Person who is apologizing is not the looser. It is actually a winner because you are a risk taker of apologizing first and it is also a polite way to be close with the person again. But, apologizing is not only for your friends. It can be adults.

For example when you did not do your homework and your teacher got mad at you, you might not understand why your teacher is mad at you because of not doing your homework which is your job not your teacher’s job. It is because you broke the promise between you and your teacher. So, your teacher will get disappointed at you and you will not able to gain faith from your teacher. It is not the end of the world. Instead of giving your teacher some excuse, you should apologize politely. Then, your teacher will believe you and you will continuously able to gain faith from your teacher. So, let’s be the real winner and a polite person who can apologize easily to other people.
