-How does the girl in the story feel about interacting with her neighbors?

The girl in the story feels strange about interacting with her neighbors because of different eating manners between Western and Eastern. For example, when Lin’s family invited Gleason’s family for dinner, they felt funny about Western people’s eating habits. In her friend Meg’s plate, it was piled with food; The sweet-and-sour meat pushed right against the chicken shreds, and the chicken sauce ran into the prawns. So, Meg had been taking food from a second dish before she finished eating her helping from the first because of mixed food.

-How does she feel about her family? Why?

In the story, she  felt embarrasing of her family because of the different eating manners.  For example, when Lin’s family was invited in Gleason’s dinner, they never ate celery without pulling the strings out of stalks. So, Lin’s family pulled out the strings of the stalks and the sound was loud and funny. Hence, Gleason’s family couldn’t understand Lin family’s habit.

-Meg’s comment that “all American slurp” hints at the story’s theme. What do you think the theme, or message is?

It is different between Western and Eastern eating manners but the analogy between Western and Eastern eating manners are that they all slurp when they are eating.

1. Describe what herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores are.

Herbivores eat only plants or parts of plants. Hence, herbivores eat more often and in greater amounts than other animals because plants don’t supply as much energy as other types of food. Ex: rabbit, gazelle, cow…

Animals that eat plants and animals are called omnivores. Ex: human, bear, raccoons…

Animals that eat only other animals are carnivores. Most carnivores capture and kill other animals for food. But some carnivores, called scavengers, eat only  the remains of other animals. Animal flesh supplies more energy than plants do, so carnivores don’t need to eat as much or as often as herbivores. Ex: lion, tiger, red-tailed hawk…

2. Explain in the terms physical and behavioral adaptation.

Physical adaptation: Physical adaptations are adaptation that allow an organism to survive in its environment through physical features. These physical features help them to avoid predators.

1. Outer coverings

Ex) porcupines(their sharp quills prevent predators from eating them.)

2. Size (Mostly large animals are safer than small animals from predators. )

3. Mimicry (One animal closely resembles another animal in appearance or behavior.

4. Blending into surrounding environment (Environment with animals marking or coloring=camouflage)

Behavioral Adaptations: Adaptations that help an organism survive in its environment behaviorally in order to catch prey or avoid predators.

1. Release Chemicals

Ex) Skunks spray attacking animals as defense.

2. Run faster

Ex) Gazelle can run at speeds up to 80km/h. A lion can run only 36km/h, so speed is a factor in the Thomson’s gazelle’s survival.

3. Traveling in groups

Ex) Herring swim in groups called schools that resemble an organism too large for a predator fish to attack.

3. Discuss and draw the difference between radial symmetry and bilateral symmetry.

In animal classification, after checking for animal’s backbone, a scientist looks at animal symmetry. Symmetry is how the body parts of an animal are arranged. They are assymetry, which is not having a definite shape, radial symmetry, and bilateral symmetry.

Radial Symmetry:When the animals’ body part are arranged in a circle around a centre point. Many sea animals have this like the star fish.

Bilateral symmetry: When the body parts can be divided into right and left halves that are exactly the same. For example, humans have bilateral symmetry.

How is stealing ideas similiar to stealing things?

They both have these analogies which are hurting stolen people’s feelings.

Why is it important to give credit?

It helps you being more knowledgeable and also helps you to learn more. For example, if you learn a new work for this week, you’ll use that word when you are speaking or making sentences. Then, you’ll start learning that word.
