In this Summer, I was prepared to flee when the Aleut ship returns and the sea otters moved to the tall rock to live because they did not want to get killed by the Aleuts if they come back. Also in this Summer, Rontu died. Of course, I cried because he was my best friend. So, I buried him on the headland and decorated with flowers.

One day, I saw the dog who was similar as Rontu which was with the other wild dogs. So I decided to catch him because he seemed to be the Rontu’s son and I had been missing him a lot. I tried three methods to catch him. I made snares, I put toluache weed(weed that is not poison but makes fish to die) in the spring where the wild dogs drank, and putting xuchal (stronger than toluache weed) into the spring. But the successful method was putting xuchal into the spring. After the wild dogs drank, they all fall asleep and I found the dog which was similar as Rontu and took him to my house.

When I arrived at my house with the dog, I tied the dog with a type of string called thong and left food. I named the dog Rontu-Aru which means Son of Rontu. Rontu-Anu became my friend and we always stayed together. I had fun time with this dog but now I missed my sister Ulape and Tutok who were my precious people.

During this Summer, I forced with natural disaster that had never happened in the Island of the Blue Dolphins. When the waves were surging to me, I survived by climbing cliff and when earth quake happened, I straight went to the headland, toward my house.

After earthquake was gone, my stored food, weapons, and canoe washed away. Canoe was the biggest loss because this was the only transportation that I can flee and this was useful to catch shellfish. So, I decided to make a canoe again with the canoes that I found and piles of pieces of kelp.

Even though it was late Summer, weather was stable and the rain and storm fall often. So while I was building a canoe, it took hard time to make fire because of windy weather. Then when I carried seaweed in order to dry in this weather, I dropped them because a ship was coming to the island! I was sure that it was not the Aleut ship because the ship was not red. It was the white men ship but when it arrived at the island, those people just checked it and left.

Later,  the chance returned to me again. The ship returned so I made a fire in order to let the white men to see it and wore earrings, necklaces, otter cape, and a cormorant skirt. Then, the white men came to my house and spoke something to me. I did not understand that language but they seemed to be sweet. However,  I asked them to take me with them.

Then I went to their camp. One of the men made me a dress. I felt foul because I liked my recent clothes not the dress he made because I did not like its color and the length which reached from my throat to feet. It also made me hot.

However on tenth day of the ship came to the island in second time, we sailed. I took Rontu-Aru with me, missed Won-a-nee, and thought of the events that happend in the island while I was living.

I didn’t take the necklace in the cave because I didn’t want to get something from the Aleut. Next day, I saw the girl, Tutok was going into the cave, saw the necklace. When she was trying to leave, I called her. I went into the cave and put the necklace on. It was beautiful and looked hard to make it. We said ‘Wintscha’. Now our friendship began.

We had fun pointing at objects and said the names. We spoke in different languages but it was funny. We also told our names and I learned that her real name was Mah-nay not Tutok. When her leaving date was getting close, I decided to give her a gift because she once gave me the necklace before and also I liked her. So,  I made a circlet for her hair and she loved it. Although my fingers were sore because of making the circlet for five days, I did not feel the pain.

One day, she did not come to the cave. I cooked a supper for Mah-nay, Rontu, and myself and waited for Mah-nay to come but she didn’t. Later, the Aleut ship left. I missed Mah-nay and the island looked very silent.

After the Aleut ship left, there were a few of injured or dead sea otters floating on the water, and I found a baby sea otter which seemed to be healthy except the deep gash across its back. I put it into a tide pool behind the reef which was safe. I started feeding the otter and I named it Mon-a-nee because of his big eyes. Mon-a-nee got bigger, his wound got healed, and he became same as the other otters.

One day he left the pool. Even though I did not have catch fish for him everyday, I missed him and very sad. Also, the season was getting cold and the food that I stored during Summer disappeared. The only way to survive was to find for food on each day. I was still missing Mah-nay because I was searching and making pebbles in order to make earrings that can match with the necklace. I wanted her to come back and talk with me.

Spring came and the birds that I raised hatched eggs and I took the gull which broke its leg to my house and cured him. I wanted to find Mon-a-nee but every sea otter seemed to be same. But one day when I was walking on the shore, I saw the sea otter which was following me. It was Mon-a-nee! I was really glad to see him.

After two moons, I saw Mon-a-nee again but he was with his two baby otter. I learned that Mon-a-nee was actually a female otter. So, I changed her name into Won-a-nee which meant Girl with the Large Eyes. When I gave her food, she did not snatch it but she tried to teach her babies to get food by themselves. I got impressed of her!

After I saw this sea otter family, I decided not to kill the animals because of my fashion or making weapons. If others know it, they would laugh at me but I would not care because animals are my friends and they are same as people which are creatures. Without these animals, I believe that earth would be an unhappy place.

I found a dead body of the old bull. Gulls already picked his bones clear, but thankfully, there were things that I wanted. Sea elephant’s teeth! Although some were broken, I ground those teeth to make sharper, and made good spear points.

Now I was ready to go to the wild dogs’ cave to kill them with my new spear and arrows which killed my only brother.  So, I first went into the dogs’ cave, set a fire in there, and waited at the outside nearby. Later, the smoke came out but much of it stayed in the cave. Few dogs went out of the cave and the leader came out next. This was the one I was waiting for most in the pack!  I raised my bow and struck him twice with my arrows. The leader fall down. After I struck the leader, I killed two of the other dogs which came out after. Then the leader disappeared. I felt curious where he went and I decided to find him but that night, I couldn’t find him.

After the rained stopped, I went out to see the wild dogs. Then I found the leader which was lying and still didn’t take out one of the arrows that I struck on his chest. Now I wanted to get rid of him.  It seemed like he was dead but when I tried to strike my spear or shoot an arrow at him, I couldn’t strike him. I think it is because he suddenly looked poor. If he had gotten up, I would straight kill him but he didn’t move at all. Later, I picked him up, took him to my house, and heel him. While I was carrying him to my house, he was very heavy that I had to rest once.  I do not know exactly why I tried to kill him and heal him but I did not really care if he died or not. I also gave him water and food, but I did not sleep with him, because I was afraid. iendly because I once held my hand to him, he backed away and showed his teeth. I think he is because he is still feeling uncomfortable to my house.
Although I slept on a rock for four nights and left the hole under the fence in order to let him leave, he did not leave. He always stayed in the cave and he watched whenever I moved. He was not even fr

But the fourth day was different from the three days. When I returned to my house, he was not waiting for me at the fence (which he had done in the other days) but he was inside the cave  and moved his tail when I gave him a fish. That night, I stayed in my house with him and thought of his name Rontu which means Fox Eyes. Now, I was able to step forward to be friend with him.

He always followed me whenever I went and he understand few words that I spoke to him. That makes me less lonely because I got a friend which I can talk to.

On the first day of Spring, I went out to the beach with my new spear to hunt devilfish but Rontu didn’t go with me because I let him out for today because he looked he missed his pack.  But while I was catching devilfish, I was unsettled that he might not want to stay with me anymore and be my enemy again that I would lost my friend and survive by myself in the island.

Then when I was coming back to my house, I heard sound of the dogs fighting so I hurried to the direction with my bow and arrows. Rontu was fighting with two other dogs and they rolled and slashed each other but later Rontu won. Later, Rontu stood up, went top of the mound, gave a long howl. I felt mysterious. I never heard of this.

When I got home, Rontu already arrived, waiting for me, and it pretended to be nothing had happened. Rontu never left somewhere himself again and the pack never returned to the headland where I live nearby.

This Spring was a happy time and warm days.

At the end of the Summer, two big events happened to me. First was I went to many places with Rontu and one of the places were Black Cave. When I went in there, the cave was mysterious and haunted because there were skeletons, flue sound was coming out, and mysterious figures were starting at us. It became dark and it was hard to get out of the haunted cave. Thankfully, we got out and decided not to come back here again. And one day, the Aleut ship returned.  I straight packed my things and put it beside the hole under the fence,  erased my living trace in my house and cave, and climbed onto the rock. After I done those jobs, I was exhausted.

In the Aleuts, there was a girl who cooked meals at the shore. I was unsettled and afraid the Aleuts especially that girl. Then one day, that girl appeared to my house. She pointed herself and said ‘Tutok’ and spoke strange word ‘Wintscha’ to me. I didn’t understand what she was talking about but I think she meant pretty because she pointed at me and my skirt while she was speaking that word. However after she left, I decided to go and move place to place of the island while the Aleuts are staying. I first carried my five baskets and left and came back to the cave because I had two more to get. When I arrived at the cave, I felt someone had come here before. Then when I went inside my house,  there was a necklace.

When we arrived at the fierce gusts where we ride the ship, Ramo ran back to the village and said that he had forgotten his fishing spear. Because of this stupid fish spear, a big problem happened!
Nanko said Ramo was already got on the ship but when I got on, Ramo was not in the ship! Then I found Ramo who was running along the cliff of the island holding fish spear over his head! Oh my gosh, you little nuisance!!! But the ship was too late to go back.
It was not me who would just watch Ramo. I walked across the deck and flung myself into the sea. I was not fearful but I was thinking how I can punish Ramo while I was swimming.
Ramo and I were waiting for the ship that might come back. We were not fearful because we were together. The island was not very safe because of the pack of wild dogs which were snarling as they go. And the problem happened. One morning, Ramo disappeared! I was frightened but I thought he would come back so I searched the rocks for mussels and thought of the food and the ship. Sun moved high and I began feel uneasy so I started off toward the south part of the island to search Ramo. Then, I saw the pack of wild dogs beyond the dune, near the cliff. They were circling around Ramo! He was dead and there was a deep wound on his throat and other parts of his body. There were two dead dogs which were lying near by Ramo, one of the dead dogs had Ramo’s broken spear on its body. I carried Ramo back to the village and the dogs followed me all the way. When I reached the hut, they trotted off to a low hill.  Even though sky was getting dark, I followed them up the hill. They went inside a huge cave. Later, I came back to the village and stayed with Ramo’s body and did not sleep. I planned to kill all of the wild dogs that killed my only brother.  I thought of how I would kill them but generally I thought of my dead brother.

Now I was alone. (alone where??) I made a spear, bow, and arrows to protect myself and to kill the wild dogs.  One day during Summer, I took the smallest canoe and went out to the sea because there was no hope of ship coming back so I decided to go to east country by myself. So, I filled a basket with food and water and went out. But when I was not able to see the island, , I was scared and there was a crack on the canoe that water starting coming out. Then suddenly, a swarm of dolphins appeared and they circled around the conoe and began to follw me. I felt really happy and not afraid. Later I came back to the island.  When I arrived at the island and got off from the canoe, I was very exhausted so I fell asleep on a shore.
Next day, I decided not to leave the island until the white men ship returns because there was nowhere to go and this is my home. So, I decided to make a house where I could store my food and live.
Next day, I found good place where I can build a house. It was the headland which was close to the cliff and a ridge of rocks. I had to be thoughtful while I was choosing the location and building because my house needed to be safe. I made a shelter and fences because of red foxes which were clever thieves that they might steal my food. After I finished building my house, I decided to make heavier spear, larger bow, and sharper arrows to kill all of the cruel wild dogs. I didn’t know how can make those weapons, but I thought of bull sea elephant’s teeth to make the point of my spear.

When Sun went up, I went to the place where the sea elephants lived in order to get a bull’s teeth.
When I reached the cliff, there were  the bulls, cows, and their babies together. Then there was a bull which was young and it was easy to catch because none of the sea elephants were playing among the waves in front of him.
Then I hid behind the rock which was nearby the young bull. Suddenly, the bull movd his seat to the shore. I thought it heard me but suddenly it went toward the chief of sea elephants spot. I tried to shoot it with my arrow but it went to a wrong way and the battle started between the old bull, who is the chief of the sea elephants and the young bull!
The battle seemed never ending so I left the place and decided to come back tomorrow.

I am the island of the blue dolphins itself which is rosed up alone on the wild waters of the Pacific…

You are riding a time machine and you are in early 1800s. I am an Indian girl named Karana who lived alone for eighteen years in the island.

During my life time, I will force with the Aleutian sea otter hunters who will be the people turning my life into misfortune, savage pack of wild dogs that will kill my younger brother Ramo, and my difficult lonely surving life. Even though I will  force with lonelinesses and terrors, I will suffer with patience and get stronger….

One day, a strange, red ship came to the island. My brother and I were gathering roots that grow in Coral Cove during Spring. Ramo was very excited that he started to run. Don’t get me wrong. I was more excited than Ramo was,  but I couldn’t act silly, because  the roots were needed in the villiage. I like to help the villiage, because I am proud of my island. I am proud of my island, because it is my home that  has a beautiful view and a special name.  Do you want to know why my island’s name is the Island of the Blue Dolphins? It is because when you are standing on one of the hills that rise in the middle of the island, you would think that it looked like a dolphin. So, the name of the island comes from its shape! Isn’t it interesting?!

When the ship arrived at the island, the people in the ship came out. There was a tall man with a yellow beard who seemed like the captain of the ship, because he was different from the other men. He stood on a boat, shouting at the other men, and his fists were on his hips. He seemed like a proud man. My father introduced himself to the stranger, because my father  was the leader of the island. And when they were talking, he told his real name,  I was very surprised at my father. How could he? Everyone in the island uses common names because if people use their secret names, it becomes worn out and loses magic. I was so worried about him. What if  it weakens him?

The stranger’s name was Captian Orlov, and he told my father that he came to the island with forty of his men to hunt sea otters. My stomach hurt, because those playful otters are going to die everyday.  However, my father wanted to get half of the Aleuts’ sea otters, because he thought the sea around the island belonged to us. So, the Aleutian sea otter hunters and my father decided to share the sea otters equally. Even though I heard that we will get half of the sea otters, I was still unsettled because the hunters might kill them all. Otters are important to us, because we use all of the otter in our lifestyle. But, the Aleuts hunted the sea otters for their skins only. I didn’t want to see the sea otters die because they are my friends.

After several days, a bulk of sea otters died, and the Aleuts were going to leave the island without giving their sea otters equally to us. I knew that they wouldn’t give equally! I didn’t trust them from the beginning. However, my upset father complained to Captian Orlov and guess what happened next?!  I actually don’t know what happened first, but suddenly, my father was lying on the rocks and there was blood on his face! Everything happened so fast and I was shocked and confused at the same time. Our warriors  started throwing rocks at the Aleuts and striked several hunters. Then, the Aleuts took out their knives from their belts and started fighting. A few island people died in the battle. My father was one of them.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. The strongest, the most powerful, the braviest, the highest person in the island who is  my only father died! The island people and I believed that my father died because he told his real name to the Aleuts.  That night was the was the most terrible time in the island. The person who replaced my father’s spot was Kimki. He was an old man, but he was once a good man in his youth and a good hunter. I got worried about my island and the new chief Kimki. Two questions came up in my head and they made me feel uncomfortable. ‘What if the Aleut ship returns?’ ‘What if Kimki dies and we have no leader again?’

One day, Kimki told island people that he is going to go to the east to a country to make a place for us. He went alone with the big conoe with two baskets of water and enough food. Even though Kimki promised that he will return, everyone including me was worried and curious of what will happen during his journey. Spring came but Kimki did not return. So, Matassaip became the next chief.

One night, a strange ship came to the island. When we arrived at the south end, we knew that the ship wasn’t the Aleut ship. Nanko said that the white men in the ship came from the place where Kimki had gone! I was happy that the ship wasn’t the Aleut ship, but I was unsettled because where would the people in the ship take us? Even though I was unsettled, I followed Nanko with the other island people.  We were all fearful but on the other hand, we were happy.

North: Need to Know What else do you need to know or find out about stopping bullying? What additional information would help you to evaluate things?

I need to know and find out why people are bullying other people,  how is the bullying person’s personality, and how much stress do bullied person gets.

West: Worrisome What do you find worrisome about stopping bullying? What’s the downside?

After the bullying stopped, the bullying person would have a worrisome and also the downside because the person made a big sin by herself and would feel guilty. The reason is that she harmed other person’s feeling and if she did really big, she damaged other person’s entire life by giving a horrible memory to other person.

East = Excited What excites you about stopping bullying? What’s the upside?

I believe that the bullied person will be excited and also the upside because the person is able to forget the bad memories of bullying. Time has a powerful power which is not waiting for you and it makes you forget something. Forgetting something can be negative way but it can be also positive way because you are able to forget your bad memories and helps you soothe yourself.

South: Suggestion for Moving Forward How might you move forward to stop bullying.

If I get bullied, I would first think deeply:

-Have a time to think about my problems. Maybe there will be some reasons why someone is bullying like I did a wrong thing or bad thing Or the bullying person is mad because that person got bullied before too.

And after, change the personality:

-Try not to be sensitive and try to ignore. Then, the bullying person would have no much fun of bullying you.

On October 28th 2010 morning, I heard the big bad news about Mr. Pash who was a high school music teacher. He had a heart attack on October 24th and passed away at 10:00 P.M last night. I do not know Mr. Pash who didn’t teach me before but I heard from other students that he was a nice teacher. However, I can pretty much understand how do Mr. Pash’s family and his students will feel today after they heard this news. I believe that Mr. Pash is resting forever in the other world.

Before I read…

I predict from the title Separate but Equal that this will be about Segregation that happened in America.

After I read…

Who? =White people and colored people

What? They were separated and they were not equal status.

Where? in America

When? between 1896 and 1953.

Why? In 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states could enact laws separating people by skin color as long as the facilities for African Americans were equivalent to those for whites.  This was the Plessy v. Ferguson case which was about supporting a system of racial segregation that started throughout the South. For example, when they were riding buses, shopping, or going to schools, white people always had better ones or environments and colored people always had left over or bad ones.

After I re-read…

Write the main idea… (Checks!!! Check you’ve included information from the title. Check that the main idea has about 20 words.)

Between 1890 and 1953 in America, colored people were separated and treated unequally under the Plessy v. Ferguson ruling.

1. What is bias?
Bias is an adjective that describes the opinions. For example, ‘Everyone loves Martin Luther King’ is biased sentence because there might be people who hate Martin Luther King.

2. What have you read or watched that was biased?
On this week, I have watched a video called ‘American Heroes, Martin Luther King Junior’. We discovered that the movie was biased because everyone do bad things in their lives but the video only showed us good things what Martin Luther King Junior had done in 1960s.

3. Why is it important to know facts from opinions when you connect to texts?
It is important because facts are only for sure and right things but opinions include people’s minds that no one can decide it is right or wrong. So, differentiating facts and opinions are important skill.
